Explain can be used from anywhere. What it can and cannot tell you does not change with your country, and nor does the following.

The German version of this page is the legally authoritative one.

This is not legal advice

Explain reads letters automatically and explains them in plain language. It is not legal advice, and not a legal service within the meaning of the German Legal Services Act (RDG) or of any equivalent law where you live.

We take no position on whether you should object, pay, dispute or admit anything. For a legal assessment, speak to a lawyer, a recognised advice service, or the body that wrote to you.

Which countries the official sources cover

This matters more than anything else on this page if you are not in Germany. Explain cites official sources, and the collection of sources it searches is currently made up of German federal and state authority pages.

A letter from anywhere else is still read and still explained. What it will not have is an official source behind each step, and the result says so rather than implying otherwise: steps appear marked as having no official source. Treat those as a reading of your letter and nothing more.

Procedure, deadlines and the consequences of missing one differ by country. An explanation that sounds confident is not evidence that it matches the law where you are.

Automatically generated content

Summaries, deadlines, amounts, reference numbers, action steps and reply drafts are produced by an AI language model. Such systems can misread, miss or misattribute content, even when the result reads convincingly.

The letter itself always governs. Check every deadline, amount and reference number against the original before you act. We cannot warrant the accuracy, completeness or currency of generated content.

Deadline reminders

Reminders are sent based on a date read automatically from your letter. We do not warrant that this date is correct, that a reminder is sent or delivered, or that it arrives in time. Do not rely on them alone to meet a deadline.

Liability for content and links

As a service provider we are responsible for our own content under § 7(1) DDG and general law. Under §§ 8 to 10 DDG we are not obliged to monitor transmitted or stored third-party information.

We link to official pages and legislation. We have no influence over their content; the respective provider or operator is always responsible for it. Official pages change, and we cannot guarantee a cited page is unchanged when you open it. We remove links promptly if we become aware of an infringement.

Copyright

Content created by the operator on these pages is subject to German copyright law, and to the copyright law of your own country where that applies. Reproduction, adaptation, distribution and any kind of exploitation beyond the limits of copyright require the written consent of the respective author or creator.

Letters you upload remain your content. We process them solely to provide the explanation you asked for.

Availability

We do not warrant any particular availability. The service may be restricted or discontinued at any time, in any country.

Governing law

German law applies, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules.

If you use Explain as a consumer, this does not take away the protection given to you by the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in. Where that law gives you more than this page does, it is that law which applies.
